For a long time, getting into the Apple ecosystem meant making a real investment, with a MacBook starting at least a thousand dollars. But Apple’s newest laptop, the MacBook Neo, changes that conversation in a big way. Starting at just $599, this is a genuinely capable Mac that doesn’t compromise much to get there. We’ve had some time with it here at the MacClinic and honestly? We’re impressed.

What Makes the MacBook Neo Different

The Neo sits below the MacBook Air in Apple’s lineup, but calling it a “budget” Mac doesn't give it credit. It’s built around Apple’s A18 Pro chip (the same silicon powering the iPhone 16 Pro), which means it’s fast, efficient, and handles everyday tasks without breaking a sweat! Battery life lands at 16 hours per charge, so it’ll easily last a full workday and then some. And at 2.7 pounds, it’s one of the lightest laptops you can buy.

A Display Worth Talking About

The 13-inch Liquid Retina screen is notchless, a detail that might seem minor until you’re actually staring at it. The display is clean and edge-to-edge. Colors are vivid, text is sharp, and it holds up well in bright lights, reaching up to 500 nits of brightness.

The Colors Are a Vibe

This is the most colorful MacBook Apple has ever made. The Neo comes in four finishes: silver, blush (a soft pink), citrus (a bright yellow-green), and indigo (a deep navy). It’s a refreshing change from the sea of basic laptops out there, and it makes the Neo feel like something you actually want to carry around.

Who Is This For?

The Neo hits a sweet spot for a few different kinds of people:

•        Students: Lightweight, all-day battery, and under $600? It's the perfect combo of efficiency and price and will easily carry you through four years of school.

•        First-time Mac buyers: If you’ve been on the fence about switching from Windows, this is the easiest way to try Apple’s ecosystem. It's seamless, stylish, and easy on the wallet!

•        Secondary machine buyers: Need something portable while your iMac stays on your desk? The Neo fills that role perfectly.

•        Anyone upgrading from an older Mac: If you’re still on an Intel MacBook from 2018 or 2019, the performance jump here is genuinely dramatic. The A18 Pro chip is 50% faster than the M1 chip, and many times faster than Intel's chips.
